DR Congo Muungano Co-op
FLAVOR: FIG, CLOVE, HONEY
This offering from the Muungano Cooperative has a beautiful, velvety body. Notes of baking spices such as clove and nutmeg mix with hints of dried fig and raisin to create a natural, honey-like sweetness that lightly sweeps over the palate and finishes cleanly.
The Muungano Cooperative is located on the western shores of Lake Kivu near the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The cooperative is comprised of roughly 4,400 smallholder farmers with nearly half of these farmers being women. The principal focuses of the co-op are gender justice and ethnic harmony. These core values are reflected by the cooperative's name, which means "togetherness" in the Swahili language. Muungano was founded in 2009 and has grown from milling coffee on early twentieth-century technology. They now have two new washing stations, a new cupping lab, and a trained roaster and cupper on staff. The cooperative continues to strive for excellence and their hard work and dedication are reflected in their fantastic coffee offerings.
