Kenya Chania Estate
BODY: BURSTING AT THE SEAMS
FLAVOR: CANTALOUPE, WHITE SUGAR, BLACK CHERRY
FINISH: LASTING IMPRESSION
The vibrant fragrance of this offering provides a cursory preview of the untapped flavor that awaits with the first sip. Sweet, ripe cantaloupe and pineapple-like acidity quickly wash across the palate and develop into a deep black cherry and red plum tartness. The coffee finishes with a light cantaloupe sweetness.
Atop a plateau between valleys is Chania Estate, a coffee farm that has been owned and operated by the Harries family since 1926. The annual rainfall, deep red volcanic soil, and fair weather of Kiambu county provide the estate with an environment that is perfect for coffee cultivation. Boyce Harries, the fifth generation of the Harries family, is the current overseer of Chania Estate. Boyce has found much success experimenting with his French Mission - Natural Process coffee, which has recently gained international praise.
The estate houses 40 permanent staff members who work year-round harvesting and processing coffee. It also provides the staff with a social hall, nursery school, and a homework room in addition to numerous extra facilities. The employees have a self-elected committee which meets monthly to discuss social, welfare, safety, and health matters. The estate utilizes natural fertilizers acquired from a small, bio gas-fueled dairy farm on the estate.
