FLAVOR: TANGERINE, HIBISCUS, RAISIN
Presenting notes of sweet tangerine, floral hibiscus, and tart raisin, this coffee from Gatare Washing Station leaves a superb first impression. The lingering finish is reminiscent of caramelized sugar and dried fig. This tasting experience will be one to remember!
It is entirely fitting that our first Rwandan offering of the year, and the decade, is from Gatare—one of the country's oldest washing stations. Since 2003, Gatare has produced high-quality, specialty coffee, and has received many accolades from Cup of Excellence competitions. The historic washing station is surrounded by hills covered with coffee trees, reflecting the abundance of coffee production that takes place in the country.
Many view Rwanda as a country blessed with excellent coffee growing conditions. The high altitude, regular rainfall, organically-rich volcanic soil, and prosperity of the Bourbon varietal contribute to an ecosystem many coffee producers envy. Roughly half a million smallholder farmers and their one-hectare parcels of land make up Rwanda's coffee production force. These farmers are members of cooperatives and share the services of centralized washing stations. We are excited to feature this fantastic offering from Gatare and the many farmers who have contributed to it. Enjoy!
